Need a snack?
This is a common question from clients, “What can I eat for snacks?”. Honestly, I try to stay away from snacking but sometimes a snack is just non-negotiable. So here is a list of some my favorite snacks especially when traveling. Let me know what you think!
Homemade Trail Mix
DIY trail mixes are easy to make and can be full of quick nourishment. Be sure to have a balance of fats, proteins and carbs. Other than that, have fun with it! Get creative! Try to limit dried fruit and soak those nuts. Easier for digestion. Here is a good recipe to start out with: Nom Nom Paleo Trail Mix.
Energy bites
So same thing here. Try to limit the use of dried fruit and have a healthy balance of fat, protein and carb. These are also easy to make. Make large batches and keep in fridge and freezer. Here is a recipe: Beaming Baker No-Bake Energy Bites (I would add some coconut oil to this recipe.)
Cheese
I recommend cheese sourced from Grass-fed cows. This will have the most nutrients. Only eat cheese and other dairy foods ONLY if you know you are not allergic or intolerant. Let's keep that gut happy!
Smoothies
Include collagen instead of all those processed protein powders, ground flax seed, coconut oil, avocado or other fat, keep sugar-containing ingredients to a minimum. Use a date or two, grade A or B pure maple syrup or a little honey for your sweetener.
Hard-boiled eggs
As long as you do not have the unfortunate allergy to eggs, I recommend these all the time! Power-packed with nutrients and yummy, too!
Sprouted popcorn with grass-fed butter or ghee
My kids love this as a snack. You can also use coconut oil.
Raw veggies with homemade ranch
Regular store bought are inundated with several types of sugars. You can make this in large batches and store in your fridge for quick snacks or salads.
Grass-fed milk
This is another nutrient-dense food but again, make sure you are not allergic or intolerant.
Raw fruit with a nut butter
I always recommend to my clients to eat some type of fat with your fruit, most especially apples, grapes and bananas. They have a naturally high sugar content. Although it is from a natural, whole source, you can still have blood sugar dysregulation from just a small amount of these fruits.
Sauerkraut
Oh this is a great one! This is a natural probiotic food. How awesome is that?! Farmhouse Culture has a creative and tasty line of probiotic foods and drinks. I highly recommend “snacking” on one of these at least once a day. Nourishing to the gut!
Epic bars
This company prides itself on high quality meats and seasonings. I recommend the the Sriracha Chicken Bars and Hickory Smoked Bacon Bites.
RX bars
Simple, clean ingredients that turn into a delicious protein-dense bar. They have many flavors to choose from so explore and enjoy! Great for the active person especially!
Soaked nuts/Nut butters
Nuts that are soaked for at least 4 hours if not overnight are easier for digestion. Choose raw or roast yourself. Try staying away from those that have been roasted in highly processed oils.
Nut butters are even better for digestion and now can be found in easy-to-travel pouches. I have these on hand whenever we are traveling for a good refueling of energy! Check labels and stay away from those that contain added sugars and bad oils.
Avocado pudding
This is so satisfying for a “chocolate sweet tooth”and has good fats to supply energy. PaleOMG Avocado Pudding
Meatballs/patties
So this is something that can easily be customized to your taste buds and kitchen stock. I cook mine usually with pork or ground beef but you can use any ground meat. Make a batch at the beginning of the week for easy snack or several for lunch alongside some hard-boiled eggs and sauerkraut. Here is a delicious and super quick recipe: Practical Paleo Chorizo Meatballs (Even quicker if you have an Instant pot!)
Avocado/Guacamole
Oh YES! Half of an avocado with sea salt for a snack or even better...blend that up with tomatoes, garlic, salt, jalapeño and fresh lime juice. So good! Eat that guacamole up with some Jackson Honest Potato or Sweet Potato Chips.
Yogurt
Here are some brands I would recommend:
Maple Hill
Dreaming Cow
Blue Hill
Organic Valley
Redwood Hill Farm (Goat Milk)
Annabella (Buffalo Milk Yogurt)
Remember to try to go with unsweetened yogurt and just sweeten with raw honey.
I hope that you all found this helpful!
